5 tips to improve your music practice

Learning music is not only about attending classes. Regular and focused practice is what helps students turn what they learn in class into lasting musical skills.

Whether you are learning guitar, piano, keyboard, vocals, tabla, sitar or flute, the quality of your practice matters more than simply spending long hours with your instrument.

Practice tips for music in Pune

1. Practise Regularly

  • Consistency is more important than practising for several hours once a week.

  • Even 20–30 minutes of focused practice each day can help build a strong routine and steady progress.

2. Start With the Basics

  • Begin your practice with exercises such as scales, rhythm patterns, vocal warm-ups or technique exercises.

  • Revisiting the fundamentals helps strengthen your skills and prepares you for more challenging pieces.

3. Practise Slowly and Correctly

  • Don't rush to play a song at full speed.

  • Start slowly and focus on getting the notes, rhythm, timing and technique right.

  • If you make a mistake, slow down, correct it and repeat the section.

4. Ask Your Teacher When You Have Doubts

  • Don't keep repeating something if you are unsure whether you are doing it correctly.

  • Make a note of your doubts and discuss them with your teacher during the next class.

  • Your teacher can help identify mistakes, explain difficult concepts and guide you towards better practice.

5. Listen, Review and Enjoy

  • Good musicians are also good listeners.

  • Listen carefully to your teacher, recordings and your own playing.

  • At the end of your practice, play something you enjoy

  • a song, composition or exercise. This keeps practice motivating and makes music a part of your daily life.
